Dear Parents and Guardians,

With the holidays quickly approaching, I wanted to take a moment to update everyone on what we've been up to in Career Exploration Experience!

We are about halfway into our second unit, "Community, Culture, and Empathy". Students have been working on exploring how those three topics relate to their lives past, present, and future. We've worked on a lot of Social Emotional learning specifically in relation to community building and reflected on how we can all be more empathetic towards others.

In addition, we've started to hone in on some of our argumentative discussion and writing skills with the topic of culture in school and our lives. Students have read the short story "Block Party 145th Street Style" by Walter Dean Myers, and analyzed the presence of the unit topics (Community, Culture, and Empathy) in the lives of the main characters. We worked on writing theme statements, and our ability to back up our arguments with examples from text and personal experience.

Furthermore, the sophomores took a stab at writing resumes and reflecting on how those connect to their involvement in the local community. Freshman made posters that represented the unit topics and why they are important/make the school community a better place.

When we return from break, we will be working on a Random Acts of Kindness project where students try and improve the presence of community, culture, and empathy here at Central HS through kindness and thoughtfulness.

After completing assignments, students put their art skills to use and helped design a holiday wreath for our school-wide annual decorating competition. The theme was RULER so they designed a mood meter wreath featuring emoji's for each section and its corresponding emotion.
