Dear Parents and Guardians,

I wanted to briefly check in to let you know that students have been making wonderful progress moving into the third marking period. We have just completed our second unit on Community, Culture, and Empathy, and will be continuing progress on our third unit Social Justice and Advocacy.

In this unit students will:

- Study injustices present in our society today

- Write spoken word poems protesting these injustices or an issue of their interest

- Write protest essays using their knowledge of thesis statements and evidence based writing to argue against an injustice in today's society.

- Explore how people use emotional and logical appeals through protest to achieve a particular goal

- Learn to advocate for themselves and a cause of their choice

- Look at careers tied to advocacy and social justice

In addition, students have just completed their first major portfolio based assessment, their Midterm. Unfortunately, only about 60% of students completed this assignment during the allotted class time and the make up exam time. School-wide, the midterm exams are worth 10% of each students final class grade, so it is essential that students complete these major exams.

I am sending home a letter with every student reporting their grades in my class to date. Please return this with your signature and any comments you may have.

As always if you have any concerns, feel free to contact me!

Have a lovely President's Day weekend and I look forward to sharing more wonderful classes with my students.

Sincerely,

Charlotte
